When I looked at it, it wasn’t clear that it was a credit agreement. Aside from all that, the promises that LA Fitness are a different kind of gym are all lies too. So now, I have a gym I don’t go to, and no way to get out of the contract.

When you go in – no wonder they don’t give you a three day pass, if they did, I doubt anyone would join – you’ll see the same old thing. I can’t claim to be pregnant, and have a husband who has lost their job, but then that wouldn’t make any difference anyway…

Don’t under any circumstances sign up for LA Fitness membership. You call up to arrange an “appointment” with one of the trainers. During this process, you will be bullied in to joining. The bullying is quite subtle, I suppose, you’re basically told, if you don’t sign up there and then, the price will go up.

It’s what I’m calling “a scam”, although it may not be a scam, in the legal sense of the word. Here’s my problem – and it’s not unique to me – I was offered a three day trial membership. From what I can tell, this is a lie anyway, and the price of your membership is based on what the salesperson wants to give you as a deal.

Staying more private means keeping your data out of the hands of the private companies that feed the government.

Once the private sector collects personal data, three main things can happen to it. Whether you’re concerned with 1, 2, or 3, the results are the same and the solution for consumers is the same: use tools and best practices to avoid private companies from ever getting your data in the first place.

If you are a lawyer, I’d love to know what you think.

We’re actually optimistic that people will have privacy 5 years from now than they do today.

Adopt the mindset of only giving out the personal data that you absolutely must—for example, at checkout or when signing up for an online account—to significantly reduce your digital footprint. Just as one bad actor can induce a privacy scare, one good actor – like Edward Snowden, or you – can take the necessary steps to reduce your exposure and strengthen your sense of privacy.

Please spread the word to the people you know that privacy invasions are a big deal.

And realize that powerful web services like Facebook offer zero protection.
